In January I was sick and was stressed about missing work. Right before myself and my family got sick we went to Mt. Pisgah in Eugene, Oregon for a bit of a hike. They had a brochure with all the names of birds that visited that park throughout the year. I could not get over the audacity and/or isolation of these Audubon folks who named these little friends. Their names are incredibly humorous to me, not only in their silly references to slang for body parts, but I realized they would all make fabulously specific made-up insults if you wanted to branch out from the regular critical name calling we often engage in within our minds toward the behavior of ourselves and others. Humor and Art have perpetually been my coping mechanism through crisis. This magic matchup up of what I found hilarious and the mindfulness of making art while feeling physically terrible and mentally worried about my students and my job helped me survive and ground myself until I was able to recover. I hope you enjoy! I am excited to be showcasing this work at The Art Department Art Supply on February 12th, 2022, from 2pm to 5pm. I hope I can see you!
